The accidental trainer

Remember that every interaction is training for your elephant brain. It is looking to make a habit even when you are not paying attention.

You sit down at your computer for your morning writing with a cup of coffee and you produce a bit of brilliance. Was it the coffee? Maybe, maybe not. But if it happens a few times, your elephant becomes convinced that you cannot write without coffee. There is no hard evidence that caffeine is the elixir of creativity, and yet you simply do not feel right trying to write without one at your side. Coffee and writing just go together. When you first combined the two, you were accidentally programming a habit.

Superstitious behavior

When animal trainers accidentally teach an animal something, they call it a superstitious behavior. It is remarkably easy to do, because you never truly know what the animal sees as a trigger or a reward.

Your dog hears the front door open and barks. You hate the barking, so you yell at the dog. But the dog, alone all day, loves the attention — from his perspective your yelling is music, and he wants to sing along. You have accidentally trained the very thing you were trying to stop.

The same mechanism runs in you. This is why beating yourself up backfires so reliably: whatever relief or attention or resolution follows the self-criticism can itself become the reward that keeps the cycle alive.

Why compassion is a technique

You would never train an animal you resented. You would get nowhere. Trainers get results through patience, clear signals, and rewards that the animal actually values.

Your elephant is not stupid or defective. It is doing exactly what it was taught, by a lifetime of experiences that mostly nobody designed on purpose. Loving your elephant is not sentimentality — it is the only posture from which retraining actually works.

So set yourself and your elephant up for success deliberately: choose the triggers, arrange the conditions, and pick rewards worth having. Then let the automation do what automation does.

Take these with you

  • Every interaction trains your elephant, whether or not you intended it.
  • Superstitious behaviors are accidental habits — including your reaction to your own slip-ups.
  • Beating yourself up can itself become the reward that maintains the loop.
  • Compassion is not softness. It is the working condition for retraining.
