F is for Focus

Most people focus on what they are giving up. That guarantees a felt sense of loss on every single day of the effort.

F is for Focus3 min

Attention is directional. If your daily experience is a running tally of forbidden foods, your brain will helpfully keep those foods vivid and present. You will have chosen a diet made of longing.

Focus instead on what you are adding and building — the vegetables you are eating more of, the walk you took, the energy you have at four in the afternoon, the pants that fit. Same objective facts, radically different experience.

This is not positive thinking as decoration. Where you place attention determines what feels available, and what feels available determines what you choose.

Practice this
  • Rewrite one food rule from a "no" into a "yes." Instead of "no chips," try "vegetables first."
  • At the end of today, write down three things that went right.
  • Name what you are adding this week, not what you are cutting.
Sit with this
  • Is your plan mostly made of additions or subtractions?
  • What are you giving up, and what are you gaining? Which list do you rehearse more?
  • What gets your attention first thing in the morning?
