L is for Learning from Failure

You are going to have bad days. The question that determines your outcome is not whether they happen but what you do in the twenty minutes after.

L is for Learning from Failure4 min

The single most damaging idea in dieting is that a slip ruins everything. It is the belief that turns one cookie into a weekend and one weekend into another year. The cookie was never the problem. The story about the cookie was.

Treat every slip as a source of data instead. What was the cue? What time was it? Who was there? What were you feeling? What were you short of — sleep, food, company, quiet? There is almost always a pattern, and patterns can be engineered around.

People who lose weight for good are not people who never slip. They are people whose slips get shorter.

Practice this
  • After your next slip, write down the cue and the feeling within an hour, then move on.
  • Set a rule for how long a slip is allowed to last. One meal, not one weekend.
  • Look back at three past slips and find the shared pattern.
Sit with this
  • What usually happens in the hour after you slip?
  • What have your past failures been trying to tell you?
  • What is the story you tell yourself after a bad day?
