I is for Integrity

Integrity here has nothing to do with morality. It means structural soundness — whether the thing holds together under load.

Every time you tell yourself you will do something and then do not, you teach yourself that your own word does not mean much. Do that enough times and your intentions stop having any predictive value, even to you.

The repair is not to try harder. It is to make smaller promises and keep them. A commitment you keep for two weeks rebuilds more self-trust than an ambitious plan you abandon on day four.

This is why the size of your first commitment matters so much more than its ambition. You are not trying to lose weight this week. You are trying to become someone whose word is good.

Practice this
  • Shrink one promise until you are certain you will keep it. Then keep it.
  • Stop making one promise you consistently break. Say it out loud: I am not doing that.
  • Keep a visible record of promises kept, not pounds lost.
Sit with this
  • What have you promised yourself repeatedly and not delivered?
  • Would you lend money to someone with your track record of self-promises?
  • What is one promise you are absolutely sure you can keep?
