X is for Xystus

A xystus is an ancient covered walkway — a place built specifically for walking and thinking. The obscure word makes a simple point: walking is the most underrated intervention available to you.

X is for Xystus2 min

Walking asks for no equipment, no membership, no skill, and almost no recovery. It is nearly impossible to overtrain, it can be done in ordinary clothes, and it is the one form of movement most people will actually keep doing.

Its benefits reach past calories: mood, blood sugar, sleep, joint health, and the quality of your thinking all respond to it. A walk is also one of the most reliable ways to interrupt an urge to eat, because it changes both your surroundings and your physiology at once.

The ancient walkway is the point. Movement built into the structure of the day beats movement that requires a separate trip and a change of clothes.

Practice this
  • Take a ten-minute walk today. That is enough to count.
  • Attach a walk to something you already do — after dinner, before a call, at lunch.
  • Walk when the urge to eat arrives and see what remains afterward.
Sit with this
  • When do you already walk? Could it be slightly longer?
  • What stops you from walking more — time, weather, or habit?
  • Where could you walk that you would actually enjoy?
