Z is for Zeal

Zeal is the last letter and the one that carries the other twenty-five. Half-hearted change does not survive contact with an ordinary difficult week.

Z is for Zeal3 min

Zeal is not the same as intensity or hurry. Plenty of people begin with enormous intensity and no zeal at all, which is why January gyms empty by March. Intensity is a burst. Zeal is caring enough to keep showing up quietly.

It comes from meaning rather than discipline. When the reason is genuinely yours — not borrowed from a doctor, a spouse, or a photograph — the daily choices stop requiring so much negotiation.

You have the whole alphabet now. Awareness to notice, Betterness to aim at, Commitment to decide, and twenty-three more. Zeal is what makes you actually use them.

Practice this
  • Write down your reason and keep it somewhere you will see it daily.
  • Choose one letter from this course to work on this month. Only one.
  • Recommit deliberately, in writing, on the first of each month.
Sit with this
  • What do you care about enough to keep doing when it stops being interesting?
  • Which letter do you most need right now?
  • What is your reason, in one sentence, in your own words?
