Lesson 11 of 26 · 4 min

K is for Kindness

Self-criticism feels productive. It feels like accountability. The evidence says it is neither — it reliably predicts giving up.

K is for Kindness4 min

The internal logic is seductive: if I am hard enough on myself, I will be motivated to change. In practice, harsh self-talk raises distress, and distress is one of the most reliable triggers for the exact eating you are trying to change. Shame is fuel for the cycle, not a brake on it.

Self-compassion is the alternative, and it is routinely mistaken for letting yourself off the hook. It is not permissiveness. It is treating yourself with the same steady, honest, non-catastrophizing care you would offer a friend who was struggling — which happens to be the state in which people actually make good decisions.

Notice that this is the same principle as Betterness, pointed inward. The bad day is data, not a verdict.

This letter is the short version. Kindness has a full module of its own — the research behind it, a 90-second reset for the moment right after a hard evening, and a four-week guided practice. If any letter in this course is worth going deeper on, it is this one.

The full Self-Compassion module

The research behind this letter, a 90-second reset for the moment right after something goes differently than you planned, four weeks of guided loving-kindness practice, and the complete five-part audio series.

Open the module
Practice this
  • Catch one piece of harsh self-talk today and restate it as you would to a friend.
  • After a slip, write down what happened without a single adjective about your character.
  • Do one kind thing for your body that is not about changing its size.
Sit with this
  • Would you say what you say to yourself to someone you love?
  • Has being hard on yourself ever produced lasting change?
  • What would change if you assumed you were doing your best?
