P is for Positivity

Positivity here does not mean pretending. It means maintaining an accurate belief that change is possible — because that belief determines whether you keep trying.

If you are convinced nothing will work, you will act accordingly, and you will be right. Expectation shapes effort, and effort shapes outcome. This is not magical thinking; it is the plain mechanics of persistence.

Real positivity is clear-eyed. It looks at a bad week and says: that was a bad week, and I am still capable. It does not require you to be cheerful about difficulty or to deny that this is hard.

Where it comes from, practically, is evidence. Collect proof that you can do things. Small kept promises are the raw material of a believable hope.

Practice this
  • Write down three things you have successfully changed in your life. Anything counts.
  • Notice one pessimistic prediction you are making and ask what evidence supports it.
  • End each day by recording one thing that went right.
Sit with this
  • What do you actually believe is possible for you? Be honest.
  • Where did you learn that you could not change?
  • What evidence would you need to believe otherwise?
