S is for Sustainable

The single most useful test for any weight-loss approach: could you still be doing this in ten years? If not, it is a temporary intervention with a temporary result.

S is for Sustainable2 min

Almost every diet works in the short term. That is not the hard part and it never has been. The hard part is that the results of a temporary change are also temporary — which is why the same people lose the same thirty pounds repeatedly for decades.

Sustainability is unglamorous by nature. It means slower results, ordinary food, and changes modest enough that they stop feeling like changes at all. It looks less impressive on week three and dramatically better on year three.

The corollary is that speed is usually a warning sign. If an approach requires unusual effort, unusual products, or unusual restriction, ask what happens on the day you stop.

Practice this
  • Apply the ten-year test to every rule you are currently following. Drop the ones that fail.
  • Slow one thing down deliberately.
  • Choose the boring version of the change over the dramatic one.
Sit with this
  • What are you doing right now that you could not do for ten years?
  • How many times have you lost the same weight?
  • What would you keep doing even if the scale stopped moving?
