Lesson 10 of 26 · 3 min
J is for Joyful
If your approach to eating and moving is joyless, you are simply counting down to the day you quit. Enjoyment is not a luxury in this work; it is the mechanism of durability.
People assume that losing weight requires suffering, and that anything pleasant must therefore be ineffective. This gets the causation backwards. The plans that work are the ones people keep doing, and people do not keep doing things they hate.
So the question is not "what is the most aggressive thing I could tolerate?" It is "what could I happily do for the rest of my life?" That question produces a different and far better answer.
Find food you genuinely like that is genuinely good for you. Find movement that does not feel like punishment. If you dread it, keep looking — you have not found yours yet.
